Cody pressed the dime in the palm of her hand and beamed his usual lopsided grin, his dimple creasing his cheek in that cute way that reminded her so much of good times when they were small. The smile that he used knowing full well she could never say no to him when he flashed it at her.

Now here he was, not a boy and not yet a young man although with the interest in her body that was all man. All wrong. But she didn’t mind too much since it was a means to an end.

“Fine but just one peek.” As quick as she could, Lacey pulled up the hem of her skirt, tucking it into the waistband. Checking that Mom wasn’t coming, she pulled on the seam of her panties as Cody peered down. “Get a good look?” With a sneer, she covered herself up, the dime safe in her fist.

That night they’d snuck out after lights-out and ducked over to Aaron’s place where she’d earned nearly two bucks letting Aaron cop a feel of her chest and between her legs. She’d felt so dirty but the money was owed to the class bully or she’d get a black eye…maybe she wouldn’t go to school tomorrow again, just keep the cash and buy some gum.

Dad was looking at Cody weird. Why were they fighting, and why was Mom crying and drinking and hollering?

If Lacey covered her ears with her hands and stayed in the closet until she was a hundred years old, then they’d find her one day, and she’d be a skeleton and they’d be sorry. They’d put her in the ground, throw a handful of dirt on her and chat about how they’d wondered where she’d been all this time, that they’d missed her. Her mom would buy a new black dress and cry real sad tears.

Swatting him away. “We’ve talked about this…no it’s not right. Cody, no.” His breath hot on her face, the weight of his body pressing down between her thighs and it hurt so much. Stop! Blood. Crying. Shame, oh the shame of it. No had meant no.

Dirty dirty dirty girl.

He changed then. Wouldn’t look at her and she couldn’t look at him. Mom asking did they fight? His moods, silences, tears. She’d never seen her brother cry before, she wanted to comfort him and not hate him as bad as she did. Home from school…running upstairs…opening the door. His face. That beautiful face–chalky white, lips blue.

No, no, no!

Cody!

Mom running upstairs.

A scream: Mom’s or Lacey’s or both.

Tugging at his legs while Dad cut him down.

Gone. That word…a little word that tore her chest open until her heart fell out and died at her feet where her brother’s body fell in a pile of bones and betrayal.

“Wake up! Freya, wake up.”

A voice that wasn’t Cody’s but still familiar. Her eyes peeled apart, wet with tears. Bright light. Throwing her arm over her eyes, Betty groaned, a sob ripping through her. She hadn’t had that dream for so long.
